South Korean NIS: Packet hacking into Kim Heong-geun Gmail for the protection of South Korea
Agents of the South Korean secret service admit that they tap the Google mail service to hunt down criminals.
In a investigation on the 52 year old teacher Kim Hyeong-geun the South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) used his data packets to read the teacher his e-mails.
According to the NIS it was necessary to tap the teacher his e-mail box.
“He removed his send and/or received mails after reading them, resulting in a difficult investigation. Tapping is inevitable if civilians transfer to a foreign safe haven services like Gmail and Hotmail.
The NIS went on to explain, “[Some Korean citizens] systematically attempt so-called ‘cyber asylum,’ in ways such as using foreign mail services (Gmail, Hotmail) that lie beyond the boundaries of Korea‘s investigative authority, making packet tapping an inevitable measure for dealing with this.”
