LinkedIn targeted by spam bots and scammers

In the last couple of weeks I noticed that I keep getting added by LinkedIn accounts with zero connections (Friends).  Today a fellow LinkedIn connection Richard Stiennon posted a message with the same notice.

So what do we know?

  1. Their  LinkedInIn profile(In URL view?id=)  is above 140000000

  2. They often have 0 connections

  3. Little to no information on their LinkedIn profile

Some questions:

After you accept them.. What do they do? 

  1. Send messages? 
  2. Add other friends in your list? 
  3. Remain inactive 


What are they after? 

  1. User Information? 
  2. Sending malware/phishing links? 
  3. Destroying groups by posting spam? 

What can you do?

  1. Don't just accept everyone. 
  2. Ask them to update their profile - so you can add them later.
  3. Report them
