The Internet has provided an arena whereby Thai political dissidents could voice their views during recent political crisis, a computer law expert said Wednesday.
After the military coup in 2006, those who opposed military ruling have turned to the Internet to voice their opposition to the power taking as Thai mainstream media shunned their views, Sawatree Suksee, a law lecturer at well-respected Thailand's Thammasat University, said in her presentation at an academic seminar entitled "Internet Politics and Intermediary Liability".
Political dissidents, feeling disturbed by the fact that the mainstream media presented only one side story of the conflict, decided to create their own contents on the Internet. This has then become what is known as "citizen journalism", said the academic.
Moreover, given the fact that social networking became more popular among Thai people after the coup, Thais turned to cyber social media to discuss politics.
